The Stencil: Rude Copper

This Banksy piece was originally produced as an unsigned print with a run of about 200 in 2002, but an additional 30 signed, hand finished prints were also made available later in the year. Policeman feature in a number of Banksy’s pieces, and this is one of five of such stencils included in my project.

The Location:

This image was shot in the same location as the ‘Kissing Coppers’ image, since it made sense to utilise one of the models from that image while they were still in wardrobe and while we were all set up ready to go.

Wardrobe/Props:

Same as for the ‘Kissing Coppers’ image, with one additional piece of wardrobe being a navy jersey from a friend’s work uniform.

  • Replica ‘Bobby’ helmet
  • Ex-issue British Police shirts & tie

Replica ‘Bobby’ helmets

The Shoot:

Since the shoot took place directly after the ‘Kissing Coppers’ image was shot, there wasn’t too much I needed to do in terms of setting up any additional equipment or changing settings as the lighting conditions had not changed. It had just stopped raining (you can see the droplets on the helmet which is covered in a felt-like material) so in some ways this shoot was a bit easier to do than the ‘Kissing Coppers’ one because I could just relax without worrying about the equipment getting wet. This image is also another one of the previously unseen photographs that I did not exhibit in September 2011.
No artificial light was used to light this image, and I shot this while standing on a chair we had brought along to allow me to shoot from a higher angle. Final image: 50mm, f2.8, 1/200.
